Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks ({WiOpt})}, year = {2009}, month = {June}, abstract = {Increasingly, directional antennas are being used in wireless networking research and applications. Directional antennas show much promise for increasing the performance of wireless networks while simultaneously avoiding interference. However, the environmental effects on the directionality of these antennas, particularly in complex environments, is not well understood. We observe that state of the art simulators make simplifying assumptions that may not be realistic and could give a misleading picture of application layer performance. In this paper, we apply a new empirical simulation method for directional antennas and study how well this models reality. We show that not only is our model easy to implement, but is also more accurate and thus better able to predict the performance of popular applications such as data striping, which we use in this work.}, owner = {andersoe}, timestamp = {2009.01.03} }
